Attorney Profile

Every team is better with an All-American.  Since 1999, Quinn Johnston has been fortunate to have Jon Stump, an athletic and academic All-American, on its roster.

Jon attended Oakland University on a swimming scholarship. While studying political science, history and economics, he gained a spot on the NCAA Champion 200 Yard Free Relay and earned NCAA honors as a Division II All-American and as an Academic All-American.  “When I wasn’t studying, I was in the pool,” he recalls.  “But in the end, putting in the long hours was definitely worthwhile.  You can’t expect a superior finished product without thorough preparation.”

Preparation and competition serve as a foundation for Jon’s tort defense litigation practice today.  He represents individuals and small- to large-sized businesses in all aspects of personal injury defense, including automobile negligence cases, premises liability claims and construction site injuries.  Employers and insurers often retain Jon prior to litigation to assist in arson and fraud investigations, or the investigations of industrial accidents.  Jon is understandably proud of his trial record, having taken over 20 cases to verdict throughout central and downstate Illinois.

Jon lists the following among his more significant victories:

  • Obtaining a not guilty finding in a jury trial for the City of Bloomington in a motorcycle accident case in a road under construction by the city.
  • A summary judgment ruling in a $5,000,000 claim for products liability and general negligence against an equipment rental company and contractors for a worker’s 20 foot fall from scissor lift.
  • Representing a nurse in a wrongful death and medical malpractice claim for an alleged failure to monitor a patient’s pulse oximetry, and a dismissal of the nurse after a two-week jury trial.
  • Obtaining a not guilty verdict for a homeowner in a premises liability jury trial where plaintiff asked for $350,000 in damages for his spiral elbow fracture.
  • A recent appellate court ruling that will likely have a lasting impact on personal injury litigation:  a finding against a plaintiff who filed a claim for bankruptcy where he failed to list his personal injury claim as an asset.  The appeals court ruled that the plaintiff could not pursue his personal injury claim because he took inconsistent positions in bankruptcy and civil court proceedings, claiming in one court that he had limited assets, and in the other court that he was owed money for an unresolved tort claim.
