Gilfillan Named Peoria County Bar Association Pro Bono Lawyer of the Year

Mitch Gilfillan was named the Peoria County Bar Association’s Lawyer of the Year on October 20, 2025, for his commitment to pro bono service across Illinois. Known as a trial litigator, Gilfillan has devoted hundreds of volunteer hours to provide free legal assistance to those in financial poverty. His dedication extends beyond his own practice as he supports Prairie State Legal Services, volunteers at pro bono clinics, and is one of the few downstate representatives serving on the Board of Directors for the Public Interest Law Initiative out of Chicago, helping expand access to justice throughout the state. Further, for the last 6 years, he has chaired the legal division across the 10th Judicial Circuit for the Heart of Illinois United Way’s campaign. The legal division has raised over $500,000 the last six years which helps provide more pro bono services and opportunities for those in legal need.

At the awards presentation, Gilfillan was presented with the recognition before numerous judges of the 10th Judicial Circuit, fellow Peoria County Bar Association attorneys and Supreme Court Justice Lisa Holder White. “I am honored to receive this recognition and want to thank the Peoria County Bar Association for their nomination,” Gilfillan said. “When attorneys can step forward to serve in a pro bono capacity, we not only help our clients, but also our communities.”
