Smith and Chaddock obtain defense verdict for healthcare professionals

Peoria County 13-L-114

Quinn Johnston attorneys Matthew Smith and Adam Chaddock obtained a defense verdict at the conclusion of a two-week trial. Patient underwent a diagnostic aortagram (insertion of a catheter into the femoral artery) in 2011. Post- procedure she developed bleeding and died of cardiopulmonary failure 24 hours later. Patient’s daughter claimed that defendant nurse negligently injected Lovenox (blood thinner) immediately prior to the procedure and that co-defendant physician negligently proceeded with the procedure after being informed of the possibility of an injection.

Defendants denied that any injection was given and further asserted that the injury was a known risk and related to patient’s various preexisting health problems. After two weeks of trial, the patient asked the jury for $4.5 million in damages. The jury returned a verdict in favor of all defendants in 27 minutes.
